And with this ninth studio album by Canadian band Barenaked Ladies, changes were made. Steven Page, one of the founding members of the band abandoned the group. That was enough to shake up the project and make the other members think in a different way. So, one can notice a departure of a sense of humour kinda childish - which can be immediately reflected on the band's name - and the 4-piece group now has a more serious and mature attitude. The members, who are already at their late 30's and early 40's are already showing that, in their music, with this new record. This, talking about lyrics. Because talking about music itself, the record ends up being a simple dragged record of Alternative Rock, whose songs are spinning around themselves and seem to be leaned on each others, in inspiration. It's far from being bad, and we actually have here an excellent work on the composition of the very catchy choruses, but initially, after hearing the album, we're not going to distinguish the songs apart very well and we'll need repeated listenings. An album that doesn't choose the "impressive" path and prefers to hold to "pleasant". The feeling that this CD gives us, can vary a lot depending on what we're doing. If you like the style and listen to it with attention and detail by detail, it works, but if you're not a big fan, it can become boring. Try use it as ambient music. At a certain point of the album listening, I went to read an old school annuary from the 5th grade - quite oldie - and the sound became quite pleasant. The band works well and we have a great work of vocals alternance in several songs, instead of having Ed Robertson as main vocalist in every track. Best song: "Four Seconds" and its fantastic mix of sounds, the song that made me raise my ear and captured my attention in a stronger way. It's, like I said, a pleasant record, but it's not for the taste of somebody who seeks for a more sophisticated sound, less contemporary. For who already is a fan of the band or for who feels attracted to these simple sounds and nice choruses, go ahead. I didn't say it was a bad album at any moment. It's actually the opposite.
